Regardless if you are a veteran or brand new to book clubs, here are a few suggestions to help you get started.
You can reach out to people in your personal or professional networks or even put out an invitation on Social Media! We think the ideal number of participants is between 4 and 8 people. This should allow time for all participants time to share during the discussion.
You can have a book club in-person or virtually (like Zoom or Google hang-out). If you're doing an in-person book club, you'll want to consider a location where everyone feels comfortable. Someone's house or your local library would be two places that may offer a quiet space.
Participants typically prefer a consistent schedule (i.e., the first Tuesday of every month), but ask your team what they prefer. Once a day and time has been selected, send calendar requests so it's on your team's calendar! Our team meets for 75 minutes and we wouldn't recommend much longer than 90 minutes.
Our Core Team Norms are posted in the "About Us" tab, which you are welcome to use, or you can create norms specific to your group. Whatever norms you do select, make sure to communicate these norms at the beginning of each of your book clubs and ensure that all participants agree to follow them.
We recommend sharing the discussion questions with your team in advance so they can reflect and prepare for the discussion. You may also want to encourage participants to take notes or highlight passages they'd like to remember. These suggestions will lead to a deeper discussion.
Once you get your book club going, connect with us on Social Media. Send us a picture of your group and let us know your location, organization/company, or name of your book club!
